Rivian shares behind-the-scenes look at Gen 2 R1T Quad Motor's record-setting Pikes Peak run
Rivian has shared a cool, behind-the-scenes look at its Gen 2 Rivian R1T Quad Motor’s run during the 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The video provided a lot of insights from Rivian test engineer Gardner Nichols, who was able to complete his Pikes Peak run in a stunning 10:53.883.
While the Rivian R1T is not the first electric truck that has taken on Pikes Peak, it is the first electric production pickup truck that truly challenged and conquered the mountain. Indeed, Nichols’ Gen 1 R1T Quad Motor is the very same vehicle that consumers could purchase from the electric truck maker today.
The R1T’s stellar performance in Pikes Peak was hinted at in its 2023 attempt. At the time, the Rivian R1T, which was also driven by Nichols, reached the summit of Pikes Peak with a time of 11:23.983, setting a record for electric production pickup trucks in the process. That was already impressive considering that the R1T is a hefty vehicle that weighs over 7,000 pounds.
This year, the Rivian R1T summited the mountain in 10:53.883, a full 30 seconds faster than its 2023 record. The feat was especially impressive, and it showcased just how far Rivian has gone in the development of its R1 platform. As noted by Nichols, the Gen 1 R1T Quad Motor is no slouch, but the Gen 2 R1T Quad Motor is just a whole different beast.
