Rivian expects planned Georgia plant to enter full production in 2028: report
A filing posted by the U.S. Department of Energy has provided some updates about Rivian’s plans for its Georgia factory. As per the filing, which was initially reported by Bloomberg News, Rivian is now expecting the planned Georgia plant to be partially operational by Q3 2027, before entering full production in 2028.
Bloomberg News’ report also noted that Rivian has applied for a federal loan to fund the construction of the Georgia plant. Rivian had secured a $1.5 billion package of state and local incentives in Georgia in 2022. At the time, Rivian was looking to create 7,500 jobs by the end of 2028, a target that received much appreciation from local lawmakers.
Rivian, however, stated back in March that it was pausing its plans to build the Georgia plant. The electric truck maker also noted that it would be launching its next-generation vehicle, the R2, from its existing EV factory in Normal, Illinois.This strategy is expected to allow Rivian to launch the R2 faster since the company no longer needs to construct a new facility for the upcoming vehicle.
Rivian’s plans for the Georgia facility were quite ambitious. Site plans posted in the Rivian Owners’ forum in 2022 revealed that the Georgia plant was expected to have a total proposed square footage of 19.62 million square feet within a 1,978-acre parcel of land. The plans also referenced a dedicated “Adventure Trail” close to the complex’s test track, as well as 144 electric vehicle charging stalls for outbound vehicle preparations.
The U.S. Department of Energy has stated that no final decision has been made about Rivian’s request for a loan for its Georgia plant. The DoE also did not specify the details of Rivian’s proposed loan, such as its dollar value.
