Rivian R2 plant construction shows progress in recent drone flyover

Just a few days ago, Rivian announced that it was breaking ground on the highly anticipated expansion of its Normal, Il plant. The expansion is expected to house the facilities that the electric truck maker needs to start the production of the Rivian R2. 

In a post on LinkedIn, Rivian Chief Operations Officer Javier Varela highlighted the importance of the planned facility to the company's future plans. As per the executive, the groundbreaking ceremony was a huge step for the Rivian R2's development.

Based on aerial images posted by @EVguyZach on social media platform X from a flyover on November 16, 2024, it would appear that the expansion site for Rivian's Normal, Il plant was abuzz with activity when the images were taken. As per the photos shared by the electric vehicle enthusiast, it would appear that construction teams are now busy laying the foundation for the Rivian R2 plant.

It's not just the Rivian R2's plant that is seeing some activities in the company's Normal, Il complex. The drone images provided by the electric vehicle fan also showed that construction has also started in the complex's two new logistics facilities. A new employee parking lot also seems to be a lot closer to completion.

While Rivian's plans for its Georgia plant have been pushed back, the company is seeing a lot of support for its activities from officials in Normal, Il. Just last month, two proposed expansions to the Normal, Il plant were unanimously approved by the Normal Town Council.

These expansions include two facilities that will be built on the west side of Rivian motorways, and they are expected to help the company with the transportation of materials and other logistical operations.
